A reduced debate of Warkworth, Northumberland, UK in Feb 2008
The pretentious cross-shaped keep of Warkworth Castle, crowning the hilltop taking flight steeply upon tip of the River Coquet, dominates the single of the largest, strongest as well as most considerable fortresses in northern England. The castle’s most important owners were the Percy family, whose lion pinned token can be seen forged upon most tools of their stronghold. Wielding roughly majestic energy in the north, their change reached the round underneath the initial Earl of Northumberland as well as his son ‘Harry Hotspur’, favourite of most Border ballads as the scandal of Scots raiders as well as the widespread impression in Shakespeare’s Henry IV. Having helped to overthrow Richard II, these aroused ‘kingmakers’ both fell plant to Henry IV: the subsequent 3 Percy Earls further died aroused deaths.
Still roofed as well as roughly complete, the uniquely-planned keep dates especially from the end of the 14th century. It presides over the endless stays of the good hall, chapel, excellent gatehouse as well as the probably total circuit of towered walls.
Half the mile from the castle, tucked divided by the Coquet as well as permitted usually by boat, stands the most some-more pacific building: the late Gothic cavern Hermitage as well as chapel of the unique holy man.
Honours!! No27 tip rated video this week!!
Thanks Folks!
Pevsner says that approaching Warkworth from the Alnwick road represents the most exciting sequence of views in England, seeing the keep of the castle rising majestically from the winding Castle Street. I agree but I don’t think tears in heaven is really the most apropos song to reflect Warkworth. Perhaps ‘The Wind’ by Cat Stevens is better. But what do I know, I’ve only lived there for the last 20 years……
you sound like my dad lol
Pah! Call that singing??
)
just realised who’s singing on this, it’s all lovely, i’m jealous
great vid, you gotta get along to Longhoughton too, thanks
I love Warkworth and love living here!
Beautiful video, and a place I have never been to!:))
We’re so sorry sir! By all means pay online but its collect only….:o)
We love the 14th C gatehouse to the bridge. If I order online, can you deliver it to my address?
Thank you! Watch out for the others vids – I’ll gradually be working my way up the Northumberland heritage coast as time permits!!
Beautiful video of a beautiful place.
I was last there 50 years ago, so glad to see
its still retained its charm.
Thanks GG – We have so much history right on our doorstep we tend to take it for granted I think!
Thanks! I was just filling in time waiting for the next Titty Sisters blockbuster
)
I LOVE seeing all the “history” from your country! As I watched, I let my mind transport me back back into time! If only those walls could talk…:-) Thank you for the tour!
What a wonderful tour..thank you so much for sharing this with us..
Not surprised Julia – Northumberland is still the most “undiscovered” place in England. Yet it bore the brunt of so many conflicts – vikings, romans, england v scotland, english civil war – which is why we have so many castles to go with our magnificent scenery!
Loved the tour! And the castle was open, even in February? It looks huge! I never heard of Warkworth before.
You’re welcome mate! Wasn’t planned – but when I saw the blue sky today…….:o)
Somebody rated this 3 stars?? Unbelieveable.. Loved it, thanks for taking me there…
