Amsterdam??
How about Seville, Spain? The flight should be less than 2 hrs. The history and culture are incredible. You can see the Alcazar, the cathedral, the bullfighting ring, etc. The weather in the spring should be nice for strolling around. And the tapas bars are packed with locals late into the evening, chatting and drinking wine. You can take a day trip to Cordoba to see the mosque converted into a cathedral with the thousands of arches — nice!
Happy travels!
South-west Ireland – specifically Kerry – Best scenery in the world, great museums, theatres, history, friendly locals (Scots are very popular!), sport, best pubs in the world, very short flight time – or you could drive. If you ring ahead (check out the Failte Ireland website, or google Kerry) to pubs or restaurants, they would be happy to lay on something special for the birthday party. Have a great time!
