I have done it. Make sure and take an umbrella stroller. Even if your child is six. You will be glad when they are tired of walking. You can wheel them around when they are tired and they can take a nap. That was the best thing I ever did. My husband and I could walk fast and avoid losing her in a crowd and hearing the moans and groans of "I am tired". Stay at a place that provides breakfast. Eat lunch because that is the cheapest meal. Dinner is expensive. Buy a lunch for your daughter and keep it in the room for her to eat. You should eat a Dinner out just for the experience. You buy her fish and chips and skip lunch and feed her dinner off your plate. Ask for an extra plate at dinner. Use the subway system or the train for transportation. Go to Harrods and allow your child to see the toy department there. Keep some money back to buy her a toy from there. You will find so many unique toys and expensive ones as well but, there will also be something there you can afford. Take the train for a day out in the country and buy a lunch at a stop. Your child will enjoy the ride. The food on board is expensive so take the juice with you in your carrier with the umbrella stroller. I always take a box of cheerios with me in my luggage so it is there. I also carry some in my carry on. See a matinee play. It is all good. We have been many times. Once with two kids and once with three. My kids are terrific travelers. People stare but, mostly Americans…people would think the kids would be a problem but, they would comment and then find on the plane they would not make a sound because I was so prepared for everything. Call ahead and tell the air line you are brining kids and they will have things to give them and you can pick out their meals. KLM is fantastic and so is Lufthansa. Bristish Airways is cramped so ask for a bulkhead. I am from Texas so we travel far no matter where we go. Have fun and remember to stay at a motel that provides breakfast!

Hi Hop on Hop off bus passes is a good way to see the city. They dont cost much. Backpackers, hostels are a good source of accommodation. They are usually clean and comfortable, well located, and a good budget price. You can usually book a triple room
for three people for around 18pounds per person a night, which is around $36.oo audollars per person a night.Or even a bit less.
And you can cook your own meals, as they have kitchens. If you can book with a credit card you can book online. They often have tourist information as well.

there are some people who accept paying guests but I think you would probably find a sort of motel type hotel where you have a family room more comfortable … a lot of the budget hotels have branches in London, try looking at Travelodge … you could also check out hostels in London and see if any of them have a family room … the advantage of hostels is that they usually have cooking facilities which helps keep the cost of food down

the biggest expense is food and drink … never buy meals in the hotel you're staying at (unless they're included in the price obviously) … the cheapest meal to eat out is lunch, particularly look for an "all day breakfast" type cafe, they're cheap and cheerful and do a lot of fried food but usually have things like baked potatoes as well … a good all-day breakfast cafe is one that is full of workmen, they know where the best food is … always take a backpack with drinks, fruit, crisps and other snacks with you (fruit such as satsumas are often better with children, if you give them too many drinks they need the toilet too often!) … try not to be tempted by too many capuccinos (they're lovely but they surely eat into your cash) … in the evening there are many take-away places for things like fish+chips, curry, chinese, kebabs, which you could buy near to your hotel and take back to eat in the room

there are many things around London that are free … for instance all the major museums are free and your child will enjoy many of them … they often have special exhibits etc for children … if you go to the Barbican and the South Bank Centre there are often free shows going on

have you thought about looking for a home swap … there is a web site where people can swap homes for a holiday … I've often thought about trying it but haven't got round to it (yet)

buy yourselves London Transport travelcards, they're the best way of getting around
    http://www.londontoolkit.com/briefing/travelcard.htm
you will probably need a Zone 1+2 travelcard which will probably cover all the places you want to go … you could also think about an Oystercard, depends on how long you're going to be here and where you want to travel to
    the tube map is at

try and read lots of stuff about London so that you can take yourselves around to the places and don't have to pay for expensive tours and guides

The cheapest would be to stay in a hotel just outside of the city. Do some comparing and you will find great deals. I would recommend checking out the website BookMe. You can compare ALL the reputable travel sites from one location, and save tons of money. Good luck and check out the link below.
