However they would need to move through Turkey to reach their objective. The First Crusade that was ordered by Pope Urban the II in 1095, took this route and over half the participants perished from the harsh desert landscape, before the holy lands were set foot upon. In your novel it really depends on which one you think is more realistic - it doesn't really matter, in fact choosing one idea might give you the ability to add extra detail and events.
