Well you have over 8mths to make your plans. When you arrive at Abbotsinch(glasgow) and hire a car. You’re about 21mls fromm Kilmarnock and once outside of glasgow to Kil. is a straight road.Hey you could be a relative of mine.I’m from kil. Anyway once in killie(kilmarnock)you are only 3mils from Galston 4mls from Newmilns and 5mls from Darvel.Incidetally there’s a very good bus service between Killie and the surrounding areas.Personally I’d be looking at boarding with a local family
Next best I’d say would be one of the local inns. These other places you mention are all within an easy drive of Killie.Though I’ve not heard of Torqueer
I still have relations in Killie and the surrounding district,So if I can help you,I will.Contact me at my yahoo address. You might think the brits drive on the wrong side of the road. The wonder is they drive anywhere Petrol(gasoline)is over $5gall.Anyway if you decide to contact me I’ll give you lots of worthwhile info

Stop worrying! Hiring an automatic is sensible, and it doesn’t take long to get used to driving on the other side. It will take longer to get used to the fact that there are hardly any road signs, lots of mad “traffic calming” road restrictions, one-way systems, speed cameras and parking is impossible! I have driven all through Europe for years and the only place worse than West Central Scotland is England! One BIG TIP — do not even attempt to drive to Edinburgh. Park and take the train. Edinburgh is small and the train station is near the archive, you cannot get lost because there’s a big hill with a castle on the top.

If you are not staying in Glasgow or Edinburgh, you won’t find things too expensive. You’ll easily get hotels for 15 quid a night (according to)– which is not bank-breaking. Bed & Breakfasts are about the same.

Ayrshire is lovely, but because of the miles of beaches and the castles, it can be resorty if not touristy. That means lots of accommodation, B&Bs though, and September is not high season! Ayr and the surrounds make up Burns country — after the Scots’ National Poet.

Having said that, the worst bit is East Ayrshire, which is a blend of rural and industrial, small old villages with massive council housing schemes (the Glasgow overspill). It is as far from tourism as you can get — it is very cheap to buy a house, rent a house, cheap for food, groceries or restaurants. Unlikely to find B&Bs, but you might find the odd ugly hotel — and I can’t imagine that being too expensive.

Be warned — East Ayrshire is not very nice and picturesque; it might disappoint you if you are expecting beauty! You could drive around all the (ugly) towns you mention in one afternoon. In September you can expect almost constant rain, so bring suitable clothes.

Kirkcudbrightshire is miles away, but is nicer — you’ll probably have to stay overnight.

Smoking is illegal throughout Scotland — absolutely NO SMOKING in any room in any and every type of establishment! You will have to go outside into the rain.

Do not throw your cigarette butt out of the car window either — you can get into trouble with the police — and that goes for butts in general (£200 spot fine).

I guess you’ll do the East Ayrshire towns in a couple of days tops, Kirkcudbrightshire is one day and the Archive in Edinburgh one more — that’s 4 days out of a fortnight. You will be driving around a lot — and that means paying expensive rural petrol prices and buying expensive food from roadside services. My tip is to find your nearest Wetherspoon pub and take your meals there — incredible value! Failing that, there’s Fish and Chips and Pizza deliveries, Chinese and Indian takeaways that are lots cheaper than restaurants.

If you are basing yourself in East Ayrshire — why are you flying into Glasgow???? Prestwick International Airport is in Ayrshire!

Enjoy your trip; it looks like you will have loads of time to explore Scotland!
