self discipline, every time you want to buy something play the banjo.
Set up a direct debit for all regular bills like rent and your phone, so these will be paid before you get your hands on the cash. £140 for a mobile phone seems very high, so see if you can switch to a cheaper option.
You could ask for your bank just to give you a cash machine card and not a debit card, which will stop the online spending at least.
Go to this site and download the excell spread sheet, It calcualates everything for you and you can change wht the have written.
well i would recommend that you use a spreadsheet or something and work out how much exactly you receive at the end of the month,
and exactly how much you HAVE to spend, e.g bills, rent, travel..etc
look at what you have left after and then that’s yours to spend how you wish,
if you on o2 contract i know you can text 21202 a blank message and they will tell you how much you bill is so far and how many minutes and messages you have left, that helps me not to go over.
i know it sounds silly but if you like treating yourself and buying things, it may be good if you brought something out of the ordinary,
i used to be addicted to buying clothes and stuff i didn’t need,
i banned myself from buying clothes for one month and after that i brought a set of bed covers and it felt really good i know it must sound really silly, but since then i would buy a little something for the house,
i still buy clothes every now and again but since banning myself i now only buy what i need, like now i need a winter coat so instead of buying other clothes i could do without my goal is to buy a decent winter coat,
i don’t know if this method would help but i hope it does,
good luck
Cut up your cash card & pay bills by direct debit each month. Even if it means getting your mum to attach her account to a direct debit, so she gets the rent each month. Or even get your mum to hold your card so you can only use it under supervision. I’m sure if your mum wants her money she won’t go looking in your account & taking money out for herself. After all, you only need to give her the card, not the PIN number. And learn how to be responsible with your cash.
You could try keeping a ‘money notebook’ – write down your regular monthly income on one page. On the page opposite write down your regular monthly expenditure e.g. rent, rates, gas and electricity, phone, average food bills, transport costs, insurance, savings etc. It helps if you pay most of these on a monthly direct debit, then you spend the same amount each month, and don’t get those nasty ‘surprise’ bills. Add up all your expenditure, take away the total from your income, and what’s left is your ‘disposable income’ – the amount you can spend on entertainment etc. Keep a record of what you spend and make sure you don’t spend more than this each month and you should be ok. Good luck!
On a notebook write down your wages each month.
Under that write down:-
Rent.
Travel.
Lunches.
As soon as you get paid, pay your Mum straight away. I don’t want to be preachy but she provides you with a roof over your head, heating, food, laundry and housekeeping services.
After that, buy a monthly travel / Oystercard.
You then have a total left over for your lunches. To save money, take lunch in to work each day.
The remaining money, put half into a savings account (which I know you don’t want but it’ll pay INTEREST). The rest is your money and when that’s gone at the end of the month, that’s it.
Write down everything you spend your money on. Before long you’ll see exactly how much money you are wasting on un-needed purchases which you don’t need and probably don’t actually make you happy / achieve anything.
You need to have a bit of willpower too.
There are many free places you can go to in London on Sundays, Brick Lane market, Columbia Road flower market (a few little cafes there too), Pettitcoat Lane Market – I rarely buy stuff at these places but like to browse and soak up the atmosphere.
I have a spreadsheet on the computer that has our money coming in and then underneath everything that i have to pay (with costs) then underneath than i put in each time i buy something. at the bottom is an equation that updates how much money i have left.
To stop spending, get a payg phone as you have to top it up. Each time you go to shop or on ebay make yourself justify the purchase, eg. I need it because . . . . if the ending is I want it, don’t buy it. If you only have 1 account open a second and set up a standing order from your 1st account to the new account for your ‘play’ money and only carry the card for that account in your purse
everytime u have an urge to buy something dont buy and put the money in a separate box soon u’ll see the money there growing and enjoy it. i did this for dieting and saved quite a bit everytime i wanted to eat out or junk just piled up the money.
