Natural History Museum is good, but the Science Museum next door is much more fun for kids. Lots more ‘hands on’ stuff.
London Dungeon is expensive and pretty creepy. Probably OK for mid-teens upwards, but not for nervous children.
Kew Gardens and London Eye: haven’t been so can’t comment.
National Maritime Museum/Greenwich Observatory are pretty good with lots of stuff to look at, some hands-on stuff in their kids gallery, and it’s free.
all of those are very good the natural history is free to get into you could also try the science museum not as boring as it seems loads to do for kids there buttons to push leavers to pull and this is also free believe me they will have the time of their lives you could also try the Tower of London if you want to go just a little further there is the Royal Air Force museum at hendon you can get there via the underground not a long trip also free to get into there is loads of places to take kids in London another that comes to mind is London Zoo
Kew is not cheap at £12.95 a go although they do family tickets.
However as a World Heritage site its worth it. They have just opened a wonderful tree top walk
london eye is crowded – long queues and not worth the money – the cruise they offer for £12 for adults which is quite good
the kew gardens are interesting but wouldn’t occupy my 12 year old
The natural History Museum is full of dinosaurs and is very good for kids of all ages (adults too) – but don’t over sell the “museum bit” i tend to concentrate on the dinosaur factor
I cant comment of the dungeons but the tower of london might be good – it is expensive (too expensive in my view) but there are buy one get one free tickets on the visit london website – its gruesome history and castley war things ETC are generally good with kids
There is the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, it is free and very interesting, as is the British Museum. I have been on the London Eye, it gives you a wonderful birds eye view of the city and general directions of many places of interest. I was surprised at how close together everything was!
Looks like a good itinerary for all.
Free things to suggest, go to piccadilly circus and take pics, and be sure to visit the major parks-esp St James around Buck Palace, Kensington Gardens, and Hyde Park. They’re great for people of all ages. Also, you can go to services at St Paul’s Cathedral for free. You can’t get up to the cupola there but it’s a really nice change of pace and you can walk around the ground floor.
Another addition (or change) you might want to make for museums is the London Transport Museum. I went there with a friend and his little one who was 6 at the time. All of us LOVED it. You can see all the buses from the dawn of time and trains and tube stuff too, and crawl around in most of them. Might not sound like much fun but I’ve been to a few of these museums around the world and they’re really COOL. It was recently renovated-I think it’s still in Covent Garden, which is close to Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery which are both free too. It has a fee, but the ones you listed do too.
London Eye is a must, but very expensive. Try to go only when the line is short and the weather looks good for the next two hours! The aquarium is very close by, which is also a good stop ($$ though).
The HMS Belfast is a good tour as well (South Bank near London Bridge Station), and so is the cruise down the Thames to Greenwich (or just tube it to save money). In Greenwich you and your family can get someone to take your pic on the Prime Meridian. You can get a tour of the Royal Observatory or if it’s a nice day just walk around and everyone will be happy.
Another great place to walk around and “shop” or really shop is Camden Town. Great market stalls and cool shops and the people watching is great. If you’re taking the tube I think you need zone two that day.
I’m going back to London for the 8th or 10th time next month and planning on Kew Gardens-finally.
Last tip: get a magazine called Time Out when you land at the airport. It has ALL the local listings for everything so you might even change your plans when you land! You might even find that when you go, several major attractions are free that day. Happened to me once when I went in March. October might have some free days like that too!
Have a fantastic trip. Whatever you choose will be a very fun time.
Kew is fine in the summer but the kids will enjoy the open space. London eye , Dungeons expensive but book on line before you turn up. Qs are usually way too long.
Museums – Natural History (Dinosaures) – Science (very hands on) Geological (Rocks and space) – Victoria and Albert – (All about the Victorian era) are all free and within 500 yards of each other.
